@Transactional(propagation=Propagation.REQUIRED, readOnly=false) public ProductH insertProduct(ProductH product) { return ecommerceDao.insertProduct(product); } @Transactional(propagation=Propagation.REQUIRED, readOnly=false) public void deleteProduct(ProductH product) { ecommerceDao.deleteProduct(product); } @Transactional(propagation=Propagation.REQUIRED, readOnly=false) public void updateProduct(ProductH product) { ecommerceDao.updateProduct(product); } } Annotating the EcommerceService forces all implementations of the service to be transactional. In the implementation of the service, notice that there is a mix of methods that require transactions and those that are read-only. For transactions that modify the persisted storage, you should set the readOnly attribute to false. Set readOnly to true when you are doing only a read against the persisted storage. You should also set propagation to REQUIRED when you are doing a modification of the data, since it could be corrupted during the transaction. That way, you are guaranteed to get a rollback if there is a failure in the transaction. Now, we will repeat the same process for the DAO to make it transactional. Listings 8-24 and 8-25 show the updates to the EcommerceDao and EcommerceDaoImpl. Listing 8-24. EcommerceDao Made Transactional with Annotations (EcommerceDao.java) package com.af.core.dao.hibernate; import java.util.List; import org.springframework.transaction.annotation.Transactional; import org.springframework.transaction.annotation.Propagation; import com.af.core.domain.ProductH; public interface EcommerceDao { @Transactional(readOnly=true, propagation=Propagation.SUPPORTS) List<ProductH> getProducts(); @Transactional(readOnly=false, propagation=Propagation.REQUIRED) ProductH insertProduct(ProductH product); @Transactional(readOnly=false, propagation=Propagation.REQUIRED) void deleteProduct(ProductH product);

Figure 13-3. A generic list view of files uploaded to a node using the core upload module This generic solution probably isn t robust enough for most people, so let s see some specific examples in the following section.

Alternatives to upload.module for file uploading can be viewed at http://drupal.org/project/ Modules/category/62. Another option for file uploads is to use the CCK module with one of its contributed file-handling fields, such as imagefield or filefield. See http://drupal.org/ project/Modules/category/88 for more CCK field types.

There are many different application possibilities for using the Canvas API: graphs, charts, image editing, and so on. However, one of the most intriguing uses for the canvas is to modify or overlay existing content. One popular type of overlay is known as a heatmap. Although the name implies a temperature measurement, the heat in this case can refer to any level of measurable activity. Areas on the map with high levels of activity are colored as hot (for example, red, yellow, or white). Areas with less activity show no color change at all, or minimal blacks and grays. For example, a heatmap can be used to indicate traffic on a city map, or storm activity on a global map. And situations such as these are easy to implement in HTML5 by combining a canvas display with an underlying map source. Essentially, the canvas can be used to overlay the map and draw the heat levels based on the appropriate activity data. Let s build a simple heatmap using the capabilities we learned about in the Canvas API. In this case, our heat data source will be not external data, but the movement of our mouse across the map. Moving the mouse over a portion of the map will cause the heat to increase, and holding the mouse at a given position will rapidly increase the temperature to maximum levels. We can overlay such a heatmap display(shown in Figure 2-21) on a nondescript terrain map, just to provide a sample case.

Need to create an image gallery The image module (http://drupal.org/project/image) is a good place to start. It handles image resizing and gallery creation. There are also some very nice solutions when using CCK for displaying images inline. Imagecache (http://drupal.org/ project/imagecache) handles on-the-fly creation of image derivatives (additional modified copies of the uploaded image, such as thumbnails), while imagefield (http://drupal.org/ project/imagefield) creates image upload fields within node forms.

Numerous modules that help to manage media such as video files, Flash content, slideshows, and so on can be found at http://drupal.org/project/Modules/category/67.
